2009 MTV Video Music Awards. 2009 MTV Video of the Year has become the biggest competition in recent VMA history, as the biggest names in music are up for it! Britney Spears’ “Womanizer,” Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” Eminem’s “We Made You,” Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” and Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” will all compete for the biggest award of the night. The nominees were announced in a video message taped by VMA host master of ceremonies, for the second year in a row, Russell Brand on Tuesday.
Beyoncé’s nominations are all for her “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)“. “I’ve been blessed this year to have ‘Single Ladies’ become a video people really connected with and responded to,” Beyoncé said in a statement, according to Rollingstone. “I’ve spent so much time watching all the great versions people created all around the world. It’s beautiful to feel you touch people and bring a song to life with a video.”
Lady Gaga’s nominations are split between “Poker Face” and “Paparazzi” and Kings of Leon, Drake and Asher Roth are all receiving their first-ever nods this year.
Joining Lady Gaga in the Best New Artist category are Drake (”Best I Ever Had”), 3OH!3 (”Don’t Trust Me”), Kid Cudi (”Day ‘N’ Nite”) and Asher Roth (”I Love College”).
Furthermore, MTV is also revisiting a few classic videos in a contest called Best Video: U2’s “Where the Streets Have No Name” will go up against Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” David Lee Roth’s “California Girls” and Radiohead’s “Karma Police,” among others, in that category.
